Atiku’s position on fuel subsidy inconsistent – Adebayo

The presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party, Adewole Adebayo, has criticized former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar for his inconsistent stance on the restoration of petrol subsidy if Atiku were to become President in 2027. During an interview with News Central, Adebayo brought up Atiku's position from the 2023 presidential election, where he had pledged to eliminate petrol subsidy upon taking office and dissolve the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC).

Adebayo argued that Atiku's recent flip-flop on the issue contradicted his earlier promise and labeled the change as contradictory, stating that Atiku had labeled the subsidy regime as economically unsustainable in the past. He described Atiku's current stance as inconsistent, asserting that the vice president had removed the subsidy regime already.

Atiku, however, maintains that his plan would utilize Nigeria's crude oil resources to support domestic refining and lower the cost of petroleum products, without replicating the previous subsidy regime.
