Apple sets September 9 iPhone event — and its first foldable

Apple has announced its highly anticipated September 9 iPhone event, which could potentially introduce the company's first foldable device. Traditionally, this event would feature upgraded chips, improved cameras, and new Apple Watches; however, this year's unveiling might be distinct, as Apple may showcase a foldable iPhone.

The event, titled 'Surprise and shine,' will be held at Apple Park in California, marking the first major product launch under new CEO John Ternus, who succeeds Tim Cook on September 1. Speculation about a foldable iPhone has grown stronger since the event announcement, as Apple has not officially confirmed the product's existence, specifications, or name. However, various reports suggest that the foldable iPhone may follow a book-style design rather than a flip phone configuration.

When unfolded, the device's outer screen is expected to measure around 5.5 inches, while the internal screen could expand to approximately 7.8 inches, closely resembling the size of an iPad mini. This larger screen would enable Apple to offer iPad-like app layouts, providing users with more space for apps when the device is unfolded. Early users who have reportedly tested the foldable have praised its pocketability, hinge mechanism, and software experience.

The engineering challenges of creating a foldable iPhone could result in compromises, such as the potential disappearance of Face ID. Instead, Apple may utilize Touch ID built into the side button, similar to some iPads. Additionally, the camera system might be simplified, potentially featuring two 48-megapixel rear cameras (a main and ultra-wide) without a dedicated telephoto lens. This could distinguish the foldable iPhone from other high-end models in Apple's lineup.

The pricing for a foldable iPhone is expected to be substantial, with some reports suggesting a starting price of around $2,000. Some estimates even indicate that configurations could reach $2,500 or more, making it one of the most expensive iPhones Apple has ever offered. Despite the high price point, analysts believe that Apple could still attract millions of buyers.

According to IDC, the company is projected to ship over 10 million foldable iPhones during its first year, potentially accounting for around 40% of global foldable shipments in 2027.
