Eby made these proposals during a press conference on Tuesday, urging the federal government to explore non-tariff measures to retaliate against the United States' trade actions.

The premier emphasized that Canada should refrain from purchasing $12 billion worth of fighter jets from the US, particularly given the strained relationship between the two nations. Additionally, Eby proposed that Ottawa should consider adding export tariffs or taxes on American thermal coal shipments through British Columbia, as the coal is a critical export route for US coal producers.

These suggestions come amid a sharp deterioration in the US-Canada trade relationship, with President Trump announcing new 50% US tariffs on about $20 billion of Canadian imports in response to Canada's retaliatory measures set to begin on September 8.
