(3rd LD) 9 S. Koreans missing in Nepal floods; 10 others confirmed safe

A devastating flash flood ravaged the Bhote Koshi River region in Nepal's Rasuwa district early this morning, causing widespread damage to markets, settlements, and infrastructure, according to media reports. Amid the chaos, Malaysian authorities confirmed that 17 Malaysian nationals are among 291 foreign tourists unaccounted for following the catastrophic floods.

The Nepal Tourism Board reported that in addition to the 17 Malaysians, over 100 Indians, 12 Britons, four South Africans, three US citizens, one Australian, and one Dutch national remain missing. The identities of another 111 people have yet to be confirmed by the board. Initial reports indicated that a massive flash flood swept through the Bhote Koshi River area this morning, severely damaging the region's infrastructure.

The Malaysian embassy in Kathmandu received numerous calls from travel agencies, stating they had lost contact with 11 Malaysians presumed to be in the affected Rasuwa district. The Nepalese government's loss of communication and power supply networks was cited as the probable cause behind the loss of contact. In response, the Malaysian embassy, in coordination with Nepali authorities and search and rescue teams, is actively working to locate and ensure the safety of the missing Malaysians.

Wisma Putra, the Malaysian embassy's office, advised Malaysians residing in or traveling through Nepal, especially those near the affected areas, to stay vigilant and adhere to all safety instructions issued by local authorities. It also recommended Malaysians to register and frequently update their contact details via the e-Konsular portal.
