World's first mobile phone call: Cooper dials rival on New York City street
Dr Martin Cooper made the first mobile phone call on April 3, 1973. He called his rival Joel Engel from a New York City street. Motorola and Bell Laboratories pursued different mobile communication approaches then. Cooper's call demonstrated a truly portable mobile phone concept. This event marked an early step in mobile communication evolution.
