Western Regional Minister settles GH¢39,000 bill, secures release of accident victim

Emmanuel Etroo, an accident victim, was released from Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital in Sekondi on August 23, 2026, after a prolonged stay due to an unpaid medical bill of GH¢39,000. The rubber tapper sustained severe injuries on February 15, 2026, when a Sprinter vehicle collided with him on Ewusiejoe along the Takoradi-Agona road, fracturing his right leg and necessitating multiple surgeries.

Despite the driver initially agreeing to cover his medical expenses, he failed to do so, leading Mr. Etroo to amass considerable medical bills.

Public Health Nurse Linda Otoo brought Mr. Etroo's plight to the forefront through a social media appeal, garnering attention and prompting action from the Western Regional Minister, Joseph Nelson. Upon learning of Mr. Etroo's predicament, Minister Nelson stepped in to pay the full GH¢39,000 outstanding bill, ensuring his release from the hospital. Furthermore, the Minister pledged an additional GH¢11,000 to cover the cost of Mr. Etroo's fifth surgery, which doctors hope will enhance his mobility and overall recovery.

Minister Nelson expressed his deep concern during a media interview, stating that he was deeply moved by the appeal on social media. He emphasized that no patient should be forced to remain in the hospital merely because they are unable to pay their medical bills, highlighting the importance of compassion and support in the healthcare system.
