Gold Fields has expressed openness to considering all options, including legal avenues, for renewing the Tarkwa mine lease in Ghana. CEO Mike Fraser discussed this approach during a conference call from South Africa, highlighting the uncertainty and delays surrounding the decision-making process. The company remains hopeful for a fair and equitable treatment from the Government of Ghana when it comes to the lease renewal.

The Tarkwa mine lease currently expires in April 2027, and Gold Fields is seeking a 25-year renewal to invest approximately US$6 billion in the mine. The company has submitted a formal lease renewal application in November 2025 and is awaiting a government decision. Gold Fields aims to boost local participation, expand community benefits, and increase the mine's long-term economic contribution.

They believe their financial strength, technical expertise, and capacity to fund major reinvestment will make them the best candidate to lead the mine's next phase. However, recent xenophobic attacks in South Africa have affected current discussions with the Ghanaian government. The Group CEO condemned these attacks but emphasized that as a mining firm, they have condemned the incidents through various association and business interest groups they are affiliated with.

The Arbitration Hearing with E&P & Planners Company Limited has ordered Gold Fields to provide a US$60 million bank guarantee in a significant ruling arising from a mining-services dispute. The dispute stems from a mining lease granted to Goldfields by the Government of Ghana, which expired in April 2026 and was not renewed.
