The United States and Canada have reached an agreement to postpone new US tariffs on Canadian goods, valued at approximately 20 billion dollars, for a period of three days. President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that the planned 50 percent tariffs on Canadian imports would be temporarily suspended, giving both countries time to continue negotiations.

The affected goods include hockey sticks and medical wood shovels, accounting for about five percent of annual Canadian exports to the US. The suspension came after Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney attempted to avert the new tariffs in a phone call with Trump earlier in the day. The tariffs, set to take effect at midnight, are part of the second conversation between the two leaders this week, though the status of ongoing negotiations remains unclear.

Both sides have discussed reducing the tariffs from 25 to 15 percent, with a key point of contention being the calculation basis for future tariff concessions. The US government wants only goods produced in the US to be counted, while Canada insists on including all North American parts, including those from Canada and Mexico. President Trump imposed 15 percent tariffs on polycrystalline silicon products to protect domestic industry from Chinese competition.

The White House and the US Trade Representative have not yet issued statements on the matter. Two industry representatives familiar with the negotiations indicated that the existing tariffs on Canadian vehicles were a major sticking point.
