Canada imposes retaliatory tariffs on US goods from September 8 as Trump trade war escalates

Canada has announced retaliatory tariffs on $19.94 billion worth of US goods, effective September 8, in response to escalating trade tensions between the two countries. The new tariffs, imposed at a rate of 15%, 25%, and 50% across approximately 700 products, match the dollar-for-dollar duties imposed by the United States on Canadian imports following failed negotiations.

These measures, designed to put pressure on US exporters, include duties on steel, aluminum, furniture, clothing, cheese, appliances, and some seafood. In addition to the retaliatory tariffs, Canada has announced a C$7.5 billion package of support measures to help businesses and workers navigate the impact of the trade war, with assistance ranging from small and medium-sized businesses to cash flow management and worker support.
