US issues security alert concerning area of Mexicali

The U.S. government has issued a security alert for the border city of Mexicali due to concerns that a recent drug bust could lead to retaliation by the "Los Rusos" crime gang. In a brief statement on Monday, the U.S. Embassy in Mexico advised American citizens to be vigilant, avoid local government buildings, and inform friends and family of their safety.

The U.S. Consulate in Tijuana, situated around 112 miles east of Mexicali, shared the same warning. President Claudia Sheinbaum acknowledged the alert was issued out of precaution, noting that while there isn't a specific threat, "there is no specific issue." Baja California state authorities have increased security measures throughout Mexicali in collaboration with federal agencies and the military.

The governor encouraged residents to contact 911 or report anonymously via 089. The state Security Minister affirmed that state and federal forces are working together tirelessly to prevent any potential incidents. However, Mexico's federal security cabinet stated on Tuesday that no evidence confirmed a specific or imminent danger to the public.

The tense situation unfolded after Mexican authorities, in partnership with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), confiscated 120 kilograms of fentanyl pills in a joint operation within Mexicali. The seizure targeted a property associated with "Los Rusos," a faction of the Sinaloa Cartel, and resulted in the apprehension of roughly 4 million opioid doses.

U.S. authorities reportedly issued the alert following the interception of a call where alleged "Los Rusos" members allegedly discussed an attack on the Municipal Police and the Federal Attorney General’s Office in Mexicali.
