US begins fresh training for Nigerian military

The United States military has initiated a new training program for the Nigerian Armed Forces, according to a report by US Africa Command (AFRICOM) published on August 24, 2026. The training aims to enhance the Nigerian military's capabilities in combat situations, the use of unmanned aircraft systems, and the response to security threats. AFRICOM emphasized that the primary objective of the training is to strengthen the cooperation between the Nigerian and US armed forces.

The training is being conducted at Operating Location Bauchi as part of a broader security cooperation program between the two nations. AFRICOM explained that the training is designed to share military knowledge, bolster the capacity of Nigerian forces, and improve coordination between American and Nigerian personnel. The program encompasses a wide range of areas considered crucial for battlefield operations.

AFRICOM detailed that the training includes instruction in Combat Lifesaver and Tactical Combat Casualty Care, weapons familiarization, camouflage techniques, water treatment, and testing procedures, explosive ordnance disposal, small-unit tactics, and unmanned aircraft system training. AFRICOM stated that both US and Nigerian forces are engaged in a series of training events at Operating Location Bauchi, with the aim of sharing military expertise, enhancing partner capacity, and fostering relationships between service members from both countries.
