United Airlines unveils 10 new international routes

United Airlines announced the launch of 10 new international routes on Tuesday, showcasing a diverse selection of destinations. The airline emphasized that demand for travel had remained robust despite economic challenges such as inflation. The new routes include direct flights to Italy's Sardinia and Spain's Ibiza, as well as cities in Luxembourg and Marseille, which currently have no non-stop service from US carriers.

United's Newark, New Jersey hub near New York City would be the departure point for a service four times weekly to Ljubljana, Slovenia. This route represents an expansion of the carrier's offerings that traditional US airlines have not pursued due to its unsuitability for spreadsheet planning, according to United Senior Vice President Patrick Quayle. Quayle expressed the goal of inspiring travelers to explore lesser-known destinations.

The expansion aligns with CEO Scott Kirby's ambitious strategy to elevate United's status as a premium travel brand. Kirby had previously made waves by proposing a megamerger, which was rejected by rival American Airlines. Several of the new routes will utilize the Airbus A321XLR, a single-aisle jet that can accommodate up to 244 passengers but, in this case, is configured for 150 with premium seating, additional bathrooms, and a snack bar to cater to longer journeys.

While both Airbus and Boeing have faced supply chain issues recently, Kirby expressed confidence in Airbus for delivering planes in time for the spring 2027 period, when most of the new routes are set to commence. Although United is currently scheduling XLRs that have not yet arrived, Kirby noted that the company is waiting to schedule the 737 MAX 10 until certification is finalized.

United officials remain optimistic about the aircraft, following the US certification of the 737 MAX 7 earlier this month. The carrier anticipates receiving the MAX 10 next summer.
