United Airlines unveils 10 new international routes

United Airlines has announced the launch of ten new international routes, showcasing the carrier's commitment to expanding its global footprint. The routes span from US hubs to a diverse selection of international destinations, including Sardinia, Spain, Ibiza, Spain, Luxembourg, and Marseille, France, as well as Slovenia. This strategic move comes despite persistent travel demand, even amidst inflation, as United Airlines seeks to entice passengers to explore lesser-known destinations.

A key component of this expansion is the Airbus A321XLR, a single-aisle jet that has been repurposed for international service. The aircraft, known for its versatility, can accommodate up to 244 passengers but is configured with 150 seats to offer premium seating, enhanced amenities, and additional bathrooms. This configuration allows United to provide a luxurious travel experience on routes typically dominated by widebodies.

While the Airbus A321XLR has faced supply chain challenges, United Airlines' CEO, Scott Kirby, remains optimistic about the aircraft's delivery schedule for the spring 2027 period. Kirby expressed confidence in Airbus's ability to meet the demand, despite the company's history of supply chain issues. He also mentioned that some routes originally planned for launch last year would have been delayed if the deliveries hadn't been on time.

United Airlines is currently scheduling the Airbus A321XLR aircraft, which it has not yet received. However, the company is holding off on scheduling the 737 MAX 10 until the certification process is complete. The MAX 10 is expected to arrive next summer, pending its certification. Kirby is confident in the MAX 10's potential, having recently seen US officials certify the smaller MAX 7 earlier this month.
