Ukrainian artist brings tragic Mariupol war diary to 83rd Venice Film Festival

The Mariupol siege diary, penned by the late Ukrainian artist Kateryna Savenko, will be featured at the prestigious 83rd Venice International Film Festival. Her poignant account of the early weeks of the Russian invasion, preserved in the Rinat Akhmetov Foundation’s Museum of Civilian Voices, has been incorporated into Sofia Bulgakova’s immersive installation, Spomyny (Memories).

Bulgakova’s work, to premiere at the 10th-anniversary Venice Immersive lineup, integrates the written entries recorded by Ukrainian actress Dariya Tvoronovych. The 68-part installation, spanning 26 countries, includes personal and collective testimonies captured during Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Savenko, who sustained severe blast injuries during the attack on Mariupol on March 29, 2022, documented her experiences in a diary that was tragically lost in a fire at the medical facility where she was being treated.

She passed away on April 4, 2022, but her diary's text was later donated to the Museum of Civilian Voices and formed the basis of a memorial book.
