Trump eyes changing Lake Ontario name amid trade war with Canada

President Donald Trump is reportedly contemplating the renaming of Lake Ontario to "Lake America" due to deteriorating relations with Canada's most populous province, Ontario. The U.S. leader made the suggestion on Tuesday morning in a post on Truth Social, stating that the United States is "giving serious consideration" to such a change as a reflection of the strained relationship.

Trump's proposal follows a similar executive order he issued last year, renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America. The Great Lakes, consisting of Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie, and Superior, collectively hold approximately one-fifth of the world's surface fresh water. Ontario, the only Great Lake not bordering Canada, is renowned for its significant role in the Canadian economy.

The United States and Canada are currently embroiled in a trade dispute, with Canada suspending trade talks last Friday, accusing the U.S. of attempting to impose last-minute demands that could constrain Canada's ability to engage in trade deals with other nations and safeguard its cultural and sovereign rights. In response, the U.S. imposed a 50% tariff on Canadian exports, impacting goods valued at $28 billion.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford, whose province is a hub for Canada's automotive industry, has expressed support for Prime Minister Mark Carney's stance. During a recent news conference, Ford firmly rejected Trump's criticism, declaring, "I don't respond to a dictator like President Trump, a bully like President Trump. I'm not going to take any advice off a guy that's the king of bankruptcies."

Ford emphasized his disdain for the president, stating, "Let's be clear, I don't like the guy — simple." Carney outlined Canada's intention to resume trade negotiations once the United States alters its approach and ceases treating Canada as a subordinate entity.
