The Paramount Chief of the Tolon Traditional Area, Alhaji Major (Rtd) Sulemana Abubakari, has been laid to rest following his death from a brief illness on Sunday. Born into the Tolon royal family, he was enskinned as Tolon Naa in 2019 by his predecessor, the late Ya-Na Abubakari Mahama II. Prior to his position, Major (Rtd) Sulemana served in the Ghana Armed Forces from 1963, reaching the rank of officer.
He was a vital figure in the Dagbon peace process and thwarted a coup attempt in 1979 led by Jerry John Rawlings. He also played a crucial role during the Liberian civil war and returned to Ghana in 2000 after the government change. As one of the senior chiefs in the Dagbon hierarchy, he served as the traditional defence chief of Ya-Na.
