THROWBACK: How Ogogo, Ireti navigated 90s Nollywood stardom

Veteran Yoruba-language film actors Ogogo, known as Taiwo Hassan, and Ireti, born Rebecca Adebimpe Adekola, were central figures in the 1990s Nigerian cinema. Their on-screen chemistry as romantic leads left fans speculating about a possible romantic relationship, though Ogogo later clarified that their bond was strictly professional.

Ireti, trained at the Odunfa Caucus, became a sought-after actress and was widely recognized by her screen name. Born in Abeokuta, Ogun State, she made her breakthrough in 1993 with the character Ireti in Asiri Nla. The Odunfa Caucus, founded in 1986, played a significant role in her career. Other notable members included Jasaw Ajao, Saheed Balogun, and Faithia Williams.

Ireti's death in 2002 at age 30, following a brief illness, was mourned by colleagues and fans, particularly within the Odunfa Caucus. Ogogo, who died in 2026 at the age of 66, was also remembered for his contributions to Yoruba cinema. Their professional partnership, often depicted as a couple, left a lasting impact on the genre.
