THROWBACK: How Ogogo, Ireti navigated 90s Nollywood stardom

Veteran Yoruba-language film actors Ogogo and Ireti became a popular screen couple in the 1990s due to their strong on-screen chemistry. Playing lovers on screen, they frequently appeared together, fueling speculation about a romantic relationship. However, Ogogo later clarified that their connection was strictly professional. Ireti, born Rebecca Adebimpe Adekola in Abeokuta, Ogun State, was known for her versatility and ability to portray various characters, earning her the nickname "Ireti" in 1993 after her role in Asiri Nla.

Trained by the Odunfa Caucus, a prominent theatre group founded in 1986, Ireti's association with the group contributed to her frequent collaborations with Ogogo. Despite the speculation about their personal lives, Ogogo confirmed that their relationship was purely business-oriented. Ireti's career also included notable roles in films like Ike Owo, Agba Akin, 23/24 Loro Ile Aye, Edunjobi, and Sikira Ereko.

Tragically, she passed away in September 2002 after battling a brief illness. Her death deeply affected her colleagues, fans, and the Odunfa Caucus, particularly as many of her films were produced by the group.
