Teen aquatic diver wins bronze for Fiji at World Junior Diving Champs

Maori Pomeroy Farrell, a 17-year-old diver from Fiji, has made history by winning a bronze medal at the World Junior Diving Championships in Croatia. The teenager, who hails from Dama village in Bua and Levuka Vakaviti in Ovalau, achieved this feat in the Boys 3-metre springboard event, finishing with a total score of 490.50 points to secure the bronze medal. This marks the first-ever medal won by Fiji at a diving world meet.

Germany's Finn Awe claimed gold with 560.60 points, while Russia's Matvei Pomoshnikov secured silver with 542.00 points. World Aquatics highlighted the achievement on their social media platforms, stating that Maori Pomeroy-Farrell has become the first Fijian athlete to win a medal at a World Aquatics competition, marking a significant milestone for Fiji diving and a tremendous accomplishment on the global stage.

Maori outperformed competitors from Mexico, Lithuania, Germany, and the United States to claim the bronze. The teenager is also set to compete in the boys under-18s one metre dive. His father, Dan Farrell, expressed pride in Maori's achievement, stating that it has put Fiji on the world map in the sport.

Maori faced a field of 43 international divers and entered the 12-man final in 12th position. He demonstrated remarkable determination, fighting like a Fijian warrior and ultimately charging to bronze, with the support of his family in Dama, Bua, Levuka, Ovalau, and Fiji as a whole. Maori's journey from Canada to Mexico for training and competition led to his participation in the World Junior Diving Championships, funded by the Fiji Sports Commission.
