Sunday Igboho, residents foil police arrest of Tani Olohun in Oyo

Yoruba nationalist Sunday Igboho stepped in to stop police from arresting Tani Olohun, a defender of Isese, the traditional Yoruba faith, in Ibadan, Oyo State. Footage on social media showed residents resisting the police's attempt to take Olohun away, with one resident claiming the officers were "kidnappers" and not genuine police.

Igboho arrived on the scene with supporters, while the police presented an identity card. However, the resident remained unconvinced, stating, "It is a lie. You are not police." Igboho later spoke with a senior official via phone, reporting that there were four officers involved in the attempted arrest. The incident occurred at Olohun's residence as part of an ongoing legal case initiated by the Ilorin Heritage Preservation Foundation regarding a social media video that allegedly mocked an Islamic prayer and could incite religious tension.

The lawsuit is currently pending in an Ilorin court. The Oyo State Police Command spokesperson, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, acknowledged the attempted arrest but did not offer further details, stating a press release would follow. Olohun, visibly injured and dressed in torn clothes, expressed his gratitude to Yoruba people, the Oyo and Kwara State Police Commissioners, and the Olubadan of Ife for their assistance. He also thanked Sunday Igboho for his support.
