The Supreme Court in Kuala Lumpur has sentenced a man, Faliq Amar Abdul Rahim, to life imprisonment for trafficking 226.5kg of marijuana four years ago, while his wife, Norsyafika Nazwa Nurizan, was acquitted of the same charge. High Court judge Noor Ruwena Nurdin found Faliq guilty of two drug trafficking offenses and imposed the life sentence, effective from his arrest on February 16, 2022, and 12 counts for each offense, totaling 24 counts.

At the full trial earlier this month, the judge acquitted Norsyafika of the first charge after finding the prosecution failed to prove prima facie evidence against her. She was also acquitted of the second charge after the court found Faliq had no control or custody over the drugs, and she was merely an individual who knew about their existence, not a trafficker.

For the first charge, both Faliq and Norsyafika were accused of trafficking 9.5kg of marijuana from a shopping center's parking lot in Sentul and 217kg of marijuana from a condominium, which occurred between 7:50 PM and 8:25 PM on February 16, 2022. According to the case facts, Faliq exited his car carrying a black box towards the shopping center entrance, before being arrested and returned to his car where his wife was sitting in the front passenger seat.

Inspection of the box revealed 10 plastic bags containing marijuana. Police then searched their condominium unit and found 217kg of marijuana in several boxes, along with processing equipment. Faliq's lawyers Afifuddin Ahmad Hafifi, Amirrul Jamaluddin, and Aina Melina Johan Ariff Lim represented the couple, while Deputy Public Prosecutor Shahrizzat Amadan represented the prosecution.
