Man nabbed over Quran burning in Seremban

A 25-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the burning of several copies of the Quran near a football field in Seremban, Malaysia. The Negeri Sembilan police chief, Alzafny Ahmad, disclosed that the suspect was apprehended at a hotel in Chow Kit, Kuala Lumpur, on Saturday evening. The arrest came after a report of Quran burning near the football field was lodged by a member of the public on Saturday morning.

Further reports of Quran theft from mosques in Seremban were received on Saturday evening, leading to a raid on the suspect's hotel room. Police discovered 16 copies of the Quran in two suitcases and a backpack, believed to have been stolen from mosques and suraus around Chow Kit. Alzafny stated that the suspect had a history of four previous offenses and had completed a police supervision order two months ago.

The suspect's family home in Senawang was subsequently searched, resulting in the seizure of 36 Quran book covers, which are also linked to the Quran burning incident in Taman Bandar Senawang. The suspect faces charges of theft and defiling a sacred object with the intent to insult a religion under Sections 380 and 295 of the Penal Code, and will be brought before the Seremban magistrates' court for a remand order to facilitate investigations.
