Six months on, grief still raw for Iran school parents

The Strait of Hormuz has been at the heart of the six-month conflict between Iran, the United States, and Israel, with numerous commercial ships targeted in the crucial oil and gas transportation route. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has documented 68 such incidents, averaging one every 2.6 days, resulting in at least 20 deaths, 35 injuries, and one missing person.

Tankers constituted about half of the incidents, while container ships and bulk carriers accounted for 20 percent and 15 percent, respectively. UK Maritime Trade Operations classified 47 incidents as attacks. The majority of affected vessels are registered in Liberia, with 13 incidents involving them, followed by Panama and the Marshall Islands, each with 10 incidents.

Iran-flagged ships were involved in four instances. The frequency of incidents has fluctuated throughout the war's different stages. From the conflict's onset in late February until the mid-June peace talks framework agreement, an incident occurred roughly every 2.3 days, leading to 16 deaths and 19 injuries between the Gulf, east and west of Hormuz, and off Iraq, Iran, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Oman, and the UAE coasts.

As peace negotiations persisted until mid-July, the rate of incidents reduced to one every 4.6 days on average, with no reported casualties during this phase. Four of the five incidents took place off Oman's coast near the strait's narrowest point, a route not endorsed by Iranian authorities. Iran, seeking to preserve control over Hormuz and charge passage fees, had cautioned vessels against utilizing the alternative route.

Since talks unraveled, the rate has surged back close to pre-talk levels, with an incident occurring on average every 2.8 days. Four seafarers or workers have been killed, 16 injured, and one reported missing as a consequence.
