Russia's war against Ukraine endangers whole neighborhood, Poland tells UN

Russian military actions in Ukraine are jeopardizing the stability of neighboring nations, according to Poland's deputy permanent representative to the United Nations, Michal Miarka, on August 24. Miarka highlighted recent breaches of Polish, Romanian, and Latvian airspaces by Russian aircraft. The diplomat specifically mentioned a Russian cruise missile that crashed in Poland's Lublin province after traversing 90 kilometers (55 miles) into Polish territory during a July 30 protest against Ukraine.

Countries surrounding Ukraine have increasingly experienced the consequences of the conflict as Russian drones and missiles frequently penetrate Romanian, Moldovan, and Polish airspaces. On May 29, a Russian drone inflicted injuries on two civilians in the Romanian city of Galati for the first time, as reported by Bucharest. The Russian military's jamming and spoofing tactics have also redirected Ukrainian drones targeting northwestern Russia towards the Baltic nations and Finland, with some crashing near essential infrastructure.

Miarka emphasized during a UN Security Council meeting on Ukraine's Independence Day that these incidents cannot be deemed the "new normal." As aerial aggressions intensify, NATO nations are also reinforcing their countermeasures. Romanian and allied fighter jets have recently intercepted and neutralized four intruding drones and destroyed an additional naval drone near a Black Sea gas platform. Over the Baltic countries, NATO aircraft have grounded at least three drones since May.
