Devastating fire destroys 30 homes in Umhlanga informal settlement

A devastating blaze has engulfed 30 homes in the Blackburn Informal Settlement of Umhlanga, leaving thousands of residents without shelter. Firefighters are battling to control the last of the flames as community leaders assess the extent of the damage. The settlement, home to approximately 5,000 shacks, was reduced to a charred landscape, with community leader Rory Macpherson describing the scene as twisted metal and the remnants of destroyed homes.

The cause of the fire remains unknown, but affected residents have suffered significant losses, including furniture, clothing, and their homes. Macpherson has reached out to the eThekwini Municipality disaster management team for assistance, as they await an assessment of the damage. The area had been without water for a week, forcing fire crews to bring in water from four kilometers away using three tankers.

Macpherson commended the efforts of the eThekwini fire service, acknowledging their dedication in challenging circumstances. He proposed that residents of informal settlements should be trained in firefighting, with volunteers equipped to combat future fires. The fire department's Public Information, Education, and Relations (PIER) programme aims to raise fire awareness across the eThekwini municipal area, focusing on vulnerable groups such as informal settlements, early childhood development centers, schools, and churches.
