Rubio rules out new US strikes on Iran for now, Axios reports

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has informed several foreign allies that the United States is not presently planning any new military strikes against Iran, according to U.S. officials and sources familiar with the situation. Instead, the focus is on economic pressure, including the recent sanctions announced by the Treasury Department.

Rubio's message to allied foreign ministers arrives as the U.S. believes it is squeezing Iran financially through a naval blockade, while simultaneously facilitating the export of oil from the Strait of Hormuz. This shift in strategy reflects President Trump's exasperation with the ongoing conflict and his desire for it to conclude, at least temporarily.

While Rubio affirmed that the U.S. does not intend to resume large-scale combat operations, he did not entirely rule out strikes if Iran initiates an attack. The clearing of mines from the Strait of Hormuz by the U.S. Navy is seen as a critical turning point, significantly diminishing Iran's leverage over global energy markets. This development has led many to believe that Iran has lost control over the strategic waterway, effectively handing control to the United States.

U.S. officials emphasize the economic strain imposed on Iran, noting that the regime's military has been severely weakened, and the economy is in a state of collapse. The White House has stated that the objective remains preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, employing any necessary means to achieve this goal. Meanwhile, Pakistan's army chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, visited Tehran recently, where he reportedly discussed a new proposal with Iranian officials.

However, the U.S. has not confirmed any current or planned negotiations with Iran, instead emphasizing its ongoing pressure campaign.
