Report: New Mac mini could launch before Apple’s September event

Bloomberg has reported that Apple may unveil a new Mac mini earlier than anticipated, possibly before their upcoming September event. According to Mark Gurman, Apple is set to launch an updated version of its Mac mini desktop computer after a prolonged absence of nearly two years. The demand surge is partly due to users seeking to run AI applications and models locally on their devices.

The Mac mini has been a significant hurdle for Apple's supply chain, leading to extended delivery times ranging from weeks to months. Tim Cook mentioned that resolving the issue would take considerable time, and the impact of the new model on wait times remains uncertain. Gurman states that Apple has experimented with both M5 and M6 processor generations for the new Mac mini, unlike the upcoming iMac, which will reportedly use M6 chips.

This news follows Apple's announcement that they will commence manufacturing the Mac mini at their Houston facility later in the year. The Houston site also houses Apple's new Advanced Manufacturing Center and is currently used for producing and shipping AI servers. Apple reportedly invested millions of dollars into the facility within a short period.

It is unclear if the new Mac mini set to launch soon will be the same model destined for production at the Houston site, though the likelihood is high. Gurman also provided additional insights into Apple's Mac lineup plans. Further Mac releases are anticipated, including an iMac with new color options and a refreshed entry-level MacBook Pro, both utilizing the upcoming M6 chips.

The most significant addition to the Mac series will be Apple's first touch-screen computer, which will be integrated into new MacBook Pro models with redesigned cases and OLED screens. Looking ahead, Gurman reiterated reports that Apple plans to launch new MacBook Air and MacBook Neo models next year, along with second-generation touchscreen MacBook Pro models powered by M7 chips.
