Rapid genetic sequencing introduced for critically ill children in Dubai

Dubai's Al Jalila Children’s Hospital has begun using rapid whole-genome sequencing (rWGS) to diagnose critically ill children suspected of having inherited genetic conditions. The new method sequences a patient's entire genetic material in just a few days, compared to previous sequential tests that could take weeks or months. The technology, which has become more affordable, allows doctors to quickly decide on the best treatment for infants and older children admitted to intensive care units.

In a study of 100 children from 18 Middle Eastern and Asian countries, most of whom were less than a year old, rWGS gave a clear diagnosis in 53% of patients, compared to 30% using the previous approach. Clinicians say the faster diagnosis leads to earlier care management and better disease outcomes. The cost of rWGS has also dropped significantly, from around $9,200 per patient to $3,500 to $4,500.
