Punched by patient’s son, threatened at police station: Kalyan doctor switches off phone, leaves Mumbai

On Monday, a 41-year-old orthopaedic consultant, Dr Yogendra Jaiswal, abruptly left Mumbai and switched off his phone following an alleged assault by a patient's son at his hospital in Kalyan. Jaiswal had been treating a patient, Jaywant Deshmukh, for lower back pain, when the patient's 60-70 year old son, Vinit, began misbehaving and using abusive language during their consultation.

Despite his father asking Vinit to behave, the son continued to abuse Dr Jaiswal from the doorway. When confronted about his behavior, Vinit allegedly punched Dr Jaiswal in the face and stomach, and held him by the neck. The incident was captured on CCTV and Dr Jaiswal alleged that Vinit was under the influence of alcohol. Upon deciding to pursue the case, Dr Jaiswal went to the Kolsewadi police station to file a complaint, but initially, the police refused to register an FIR.

A case was later registered against Vinit under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, but he remains at large. Dr Jaiswal's decision to step away from work was motivated by his concern for his elderly parents, whose faith in humanity was shaken after they witnessed the assault on news channels.
