Public toilets maintained, markets upgraded, drains improved: Housing Ministry says six initiatives surpass targets

Putrajaya, Aug 25 — Six significant initiatives implemented by the Housing and Local Government Ministry (KPKT) under Budget 2026 have outperformed their targets as of July 31. The maintenance of public toilets in local authority (PBT) areas led the pack with a remarkable 734 per cent achievement, said Minister Nga Kor Ming. He credited the Ministry's ability to efficiently and responsively execute the Madani Government agenda, particularly in providing improved public facilities.

"This achievement shows that every ringgit allocated by the Government results in tangible benefits for the people," Nga stated in a recent statement. Since the Madani Government's inauguration in 2023, KPKT has overseen approximately 16,000 public facility projects, alongside receiving accolades like the National Development Award and Prime Minister's Innovation Award.

The public toilet maintenance initiative in PBT areas, allocated RM30 million, demonstrated extraordinary performance with 367 projects implemented, surpassing the original target of 50 projects. Construction of Madani stalls and upgrades to dilapidated public markets also exceeded expectations, with 102 projects completed against a target of 60, involving RM60 million.

Additionally, 304 maintenance projects for non-Muslim places of worship met a 152 per cent achievement rate, utilizing RM50 million. Drainage and sewerage system upgrades recorded a 102.67 per cent achievement rate, with 154 projects implemented from a target of 150, using RM55 million. All 113 projects to upgrade fire stations and quarters were successfully completed with a RM10 million allocation, and 57 out of 64 Bomba Bersama Rakyat Programme programmes were completed, attaining an 89 per cent implementation rate.

Nga expressed KPKT's commitment to finishing the remaining programmes to either meet or surpass the 100 per cent target by year-end. This commitment aligns with enhancing collaboration between the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM), the community, and strengthening ties for fire safety and prevention awareness.
