Philippines to expand military drone fleet as South China Sea tensions rise

The Philippines intends to broaden its unmanned military capabilities, according to Defence Secretary Gilberto Teodoro. This expansion of drone operations is part of the country's efforts to modernize its military, as reported during a budget hearing in the lower house of Congress. The Philippines aims to strengthen its external defense capabilities by procuring additional guided-missile corvettes and other major defense assets.

This shift in security focus comes as tensions escalate between Manila and Beijing in the South China Sea, where frequent confrontations have occurred over disputed features within Manila's exclusive economic zone in recent years. Currently, the armed forces operate a fleet of unmanned aerial vehicles for intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance purposes.

Teodoro announced a 6.3 percent increase in the defence ministry's budget for 2027, which is nearly 25 percent higher than the current budget, amounting to 50 billion pesos. This increased allocation is earmarked for a modernization program, with a focus on developing systems, connectivity, and operational expertise required to effectively utilize drones.

The integration of personnel with drones and their utilization remains a priority, as highlighted by Teodoro. Specific drone systems under consideration have not been disclosed due to their sensitive nature, particularly concerning AI integration. Teodoro emphasized that close cooperation with countries possessing drone technology expertise is crucial.

Ukraine's ambassador to the Philippines, Yuliia Fediv, mentioned in June that discussions with Manila are underway regarding drone technology cooperation. In June, the United States announced the provision of four solar-powered sea drones to bolster the Philippine military's maritime surveillance efforts.
