Perplexity partners with Nvidia to launch Portable Computer, a fully local AI agent with zero token costs

Perplexity has partnered with Nvidia to launch Portable Computer, a fully local AI agent that runs without any token costs. This new version of Perplexity's agentic Computer platform runs on hardware users already own, such as Nvidia's DGX Spark desktop supercomputer and Linux machines with Nvidia RTX GPUs. The goal is to move serious AI agent workloads off the cloud and onto local devices, offering a more practical solution compared to hobbyist quantized models.

Portable Computer packages the full local AI stack, including models, the agent harness, inference engine, tools, app connectors, and a security sandbox, into a single app. This simplifies the process of setting up local AI, which traditionally required users to assemble and operate the pieces separately. The company demonstrated the system's capabilities, such as reviewing financial documents and pushing analysis results to Slack, all while using no cloud credits.

Nvidia views local AI as transitioning from hobbyist interest to a practical tool, and this launch signals their belief in the potential of local AI hardware. Portable Computer is currently available for Linux users on Perplexity's Pro, Max, Enterprise Pro, and Enterprise Max plans, with Windows support expected in September.
