Parliament Recalled Over Urgent Financial Sector Bill – Speaker

Alban Bagbin, the Speaker of Parliament, has convened the House from its postponed session to deliberate on matters of utmost importance concerning Ghana's financial sector stability. This unexpected recall, just a month after Parliament adjourned, was prompted by a request from President John Dramani Mahama. The President highlighted three issues requiring immediate parliamentary attention: the Banks and Specialised Deposit-Taking Institutions Amendment Bill, nominations for two Minister of State positions, and three appointments to the Supreme Court.

At the emergency session, Speaker Bagbin assured the House that the urgency and importance of the presented matters warranted the recall. The brief submitted by the President regarding the proposed amendment bill raised significant concerns about the financial sector's regulation, stability, and overall impact on the economy. The Speaker clarified that his decision to recall Parliament was not an endorsement of the proposed legislation but merely granted the House the opportunity to consider the matters at hand.

He emphasized that Parliament, as a constitutional body, must be prepared to fulfill its responsibilities whenever the situation demands. The recall session urged Members of Parliament to uphold high standards of conduct, as Parliament's constitutional duties were not suspended by the House's adjournment.
