Ogundare, Obieze Lift Indian 80TH Independence Day Titles at Ikeja

The Indian Independence Day Cup 2026 Tournament, held at Ikeja Golf Club to commemorate the 80th anniversary of Indian independence, showcased exceptional golfing talent. All categories, including men's and women's competitions, were won in this third edition tournament in the Indian community, drawing over 140 players from various golfing communities across Ikeja, Ikoyi, and Lakowe.

Jimoh Ogundare and Linda Obieze took home the overall victories in the men's and women's categories, respectively. Ogundare secured 38 points and claimed the championship title, earning a trophy and a carton of vegetable oil. Wale Kalejaiye secured the first runner-up spot with the same 38 points. Henry Gboneme placed second with 37 points.

In the women's competition, Linda Obieze emerged as the overall winner with a commendable 36 points, outshining Abiodun Hassan with 33 points. Charming performances were also displayed by Tokunbo Ogunbiyi, who claimed the title for the longest drive in the men's category, while Chichi Alamu won the equivalent title for the ladies' competition.

The tournament was not without individual excellence. Zed Jituboh claimed the men's longest drive title, while Chichi Alamu claimed the women's counterpart. Zed Jituboh also secured the men's nearest to the pin title, and Rasaki Muritala was placed second. The course's challenging nature pushed the golfers, with the highest score of 38 points, contrasting the previous year's average of 40 points.

Addressing the prize presentation, Vice Captain Ejiro Ogomigo praised the tournament's success, stating that it was a major improvement compared to previous years. Celebrating the Indian community's 80th independence anniversary, Ogomigo emphasized that the event was eagerly anticipated every year, urging continued growth for the event.

Gagandeep Lakhanpal, an active member of the Indian golf community, expressed excitement at combining their love for golf and their country's independence celebration with their Nigerian friends at Ikeja Golf Club. Lakhanpal stressed the importance of making the tournament an annual event to continue honoring their community and participants.
