AFN Warns Nigerian Athletes against Signing Unfavourable Deals

The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) is warning its athletes against signing unfavorable deals, emphasizing that no agreement with agents or third parties is irreversible. AFN President, Chief Tonobok Okowa, stated that the Federation closely watches such agreements and will intervene if they are detrimental to the athlete or Nigeria's interests.

Okowa, also a senior vice president of the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA), highlighted the importance of protecting athletes' welfare and long-term interests. He clarified that AFN hasn't entered into any agreements with agents or agencies to provide scholarships to Nigerian athletes, urging athletes and their families to be cautious before committing to any arrangement.

The Federation stressed that young athletes should not enter into agreements without parental or legal guardian consent, as such deals could negatively impact their education, careers, or national representation. AFN has already advised an athlete to terminate an agreement with an agent and a school, deeming the arrangement detrimental to the athlete's best interests and Nigeria's interests.

Okowa also stated that AFN refuses to work with Auburn University in the United States until coach Ken departs, citing concerns that the coach discourages Nigerian athletes from representing their country. The Federation remains vigilant in scrutinizing agreements involving Nigerian athletes, foreign institutions, agents, and other parties, ensuring that opportunities provided to Nigerian athletes enhance their development without compromising their careers or national representation.
