Nepali PM allowed to wear signature sunglasses in parliament

Kathmandu, Nepal - Nepal's Prime Minister Balendra Shah, also known as Balen, may retain his signature dark sunglasses in the parliament due to medical reasons, according to an official statement. The 36-year-old premier, who rose to prominence through his campaign for the mayoral position in Kathmandu in 2022, has been spotted wearing these rectangular shades in various public appearances.

Despite the parliament speaker, Dol Prasad Aryal, advising against the use of dark glasses in the chamber due to public criticism, Shah has reportedly submitted a report to the secretariat citing medical necessity for wearing the sunglasses. The report suggests that the PM requires the glasses in bright light for medical reasons. Therefore, Shah will be permitted to wear the glasses in parliament if they are deemed medically necessary.

Although Shah has maintained a relatively low profile since assuming office in March, the dark glasses have become a defining characteristic of his public persona. They are often worn alongside an all-black outfit. The popularity of the glasses has soared, with shops selling replicas, labeled as "Balen sunglasses," catering to fans eager to emulate the prime minister's style.
