NDC candidate warns Lagos faces rising flood risk over blocked drains

Lagos Central Senatorial District candidate Ladipo Johnson has raised alarm over the increasing risk of flooding in parts of Lagos due to blocked drains, indiscriminate land reclamation and major engineering projects. In a statement on Tuesday, Johnson revealed his vision and legislative agenda for the district. He pointed out issues ranging from the environmental impact survey for Ilubirin development to cattle rearing on drainage paths near the Third Mainland Bridge.

Johnson noted rising water levels around Lagos Island, Marina and Lagoon areas, warning that if action is not taken within two to three decades, significant portions of the city could be submerged. Johnson also blamed residents for worsening the situation through poor environmental practices, calling for better public awareness and behavioural change.

He urged residents to clean drains properly and remove debris like plastic bottles and nylons. The flooding has impacted major roads and communities in Lagos, disrupting movement, businesses and causing property damage. Johnson emphasized Lagos Central as a crucial economic hub that requires stronger representation in the National Assembly.
