Mumbai Crime: 68 LPG Cylinders Seized From Abandoned Vehicle In Chembur; Case Registered Under Essential Commodities Act

Mumbai, August 25, 2026: Sixty-eight LPG cylinders have been seized from a deserted vehicle parked near Tilak Nagar Bridge in Chembur after an inspection by officials from the Food and Civil Supplies Department. A case has been filed against the vehicle's owner under the Essential Commodities Act, 1955, and the LPG Regulation of Supply and Distribution Order, 2000.

The complainant, Nitin Madhukar Dhumal, 53, is a Rationing Officer at Rationing Office No. 19. On August 24, officials received information about the suspected illegal storage of LPG cylinders in the area and conducted an inspection with the help of rationing inspectors and Kurla Rationing Office employees. An individual named Ashish Chavan claimed to be supervising the LPG cylinders at the location, stating that drivers of two trucks were present.

Inspectors questioned driver Mohammed Mustaqim Naseem Ahmed Khan, who produced invoices showing that truck MH-13-CU-6058 had been loaded with 235 filled 19-kg cylinders for Honesty Gas Service, and truck MH-03-EG-2537 had been loaded with 93 empty 19-kg cylinders for Cookwell Gas Agency on the same day. The inspection team found 235 filled 19-kg cylinders in the first truck and 93 empty cylinders in the second truck.

The vehicle, bearing registration number MH-03-CV-8943, was found in a non-operational condition and parked in a location with heavy traffic, raising concerns about illegal storage under the Essential Commodities Act and the LPG Regulation of Supply and Distribution Order. The police have registered a case and are investigating to identify the vehicle's owner and the source and destination of the cylinders.
