Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Optimistic on US Trade Deal Amid US-Canada Impasse

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum remains confident in her ability to secure a trade agreement with the United States, even as high-level talks in Washington follow the collapse of US-Canada trade negotiations. Economy Minister Marcelo Ebrard, who serves as Sheinbaum's top trade negotiator, will remain in Washington for several days to work on lowering the heavy tariffs imposed on Mexican steel and aluminum, as well as automobiles.

The ongoing talks are focused on the framework of the six-year-old USMCA trade pact involving the US, Mexico, and Canada, which recently entered its annual review phase. The failure of the US-Canada negotiations led to the imposition of 50% US tariffs on approximately $20 billion worth of Canadian goods, prompting Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney to retaliate with his own tariffs taking effect on September 8.

Despite the regional turbulence and the breakdown in US-Canada relations, Sheinbaum expressed optimism about reaching a mutually beneficial agreement with the US administration. Investors and industry stakeholders will closely monitor the outcome of the annual reviews of the USMCA, as the result will determine the stability or further protectionist barriers in North American trade.
