Melaka, Singapore straits show what countries can achieve through close cooperation, says minister

Singapore Transport Minister Jeffrey Siow highlighted the Strait of Malacca and Singapore Strait as a prime illustration of what nations can accomplish through close cooperation, according to a report. Siow emphasized that for over five decades, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore have collaborated diligently to enhance navigational safety, even in regions where maritime boundaries remain unresolved.

Despite potential disagreements, the three countries steadfastly prioritized cooperation above all else, Siow explained during the book launch of "The Straits of Malacca and Singapore: A Model for the World." Siow stressed that safeguarding the waters is not only advantageous to the neighboring countries but also to the global community, as nearly a quarter of the world’s maritime trade passes through the straits.

The National University of Singapore's Centre for International Law published the book, which delves into the successful management of the straits by Singapore, Malaysia, and Indonesia, balancing freedom of navigation with sovereignty and environmental preservation. The publication also underscores Singapore’s crucial role in shaping regional maritime governance, from its diplomatic lead in negotiating the transit passage regime at the Third UN Conference on the Law of the Sea to pioneering technical innovations that ensure safe navigation.
