MCA’s real test is winning back urban voters from DAP, says analyst

MCA secured eight seats for the BN in Johor and two in Negeri Sembilan during the recent elections, marking a morale-boosting victory for the party. However, an analyst has warned that regaining control of urban seats from the DAP is a far more challenging task. Lau Zhe Wei of the International Islamic University Malaysia emphasized that the MCA's main challenge lies in reestablishing support in urban areas, specifically in states like Selangor, Penang, Perak, and Kuala Lumpur, where the DAP maintains a dominant presence.

The analyst also pointed out that MCA's recent wins should not be considered a full recovery, as they occurred amidst BN's cooperation with the Perikatan Nasional (PN), particularly in consolidating Malay votes in contested seats. Furthermore, Chinese voters have largely remained loyal to the DAP and its allies since the 2008 general election. MCA will need to gradually rebuild voter trust and showcase its ability to solve problems through its elected representatives to convince voters that the party still holds relevance.

MCA President Wee Ka Siong recently cautioned party leaders not to become complacent over the party's small victories. Meanwhile, Mazlan Ali of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia noted that the BN-PN arrangement, which led to MCA's recent gains, could become a liability if future joint campaigns focus excessively on a Malay-Islamic narrative.

Ali warned that if MCA becomes increasingly dependent on Malay votes due to such a coalition, it risks alienating non-Malays who may continue to support the DAP. For MCA to regain its core voter support, it must demonstrate its ability to champion Chinese community interests while not being confined to a single racial identity.
