Fire crews gain ground on destructive blaze raging near Reno, Nevada

Reno, Nevada recently faced a devastating wildfire known as the Hawk Fire, which threatened the city and surrounding areas over the weekend. Firefighters made significant progress in containing the blaze, carving containment lines around 27% of the fire by Monday. The fire, which began near Nevada's third-most-populous city, spread through dry grass, brush, and forest into residential areas, burning over 6,070 hectares within 48 hours.

No fatalities were reported, but four civilians and three emergency personnel suffered minor burns during the initial hours of the fire. The blaze destroyed at least 32 homes and damaged several others, with the total property loss expected to rise as assessments continue. Luke Opperman, a civil engineer, and his family lost their nearly 20-year-old home when flames consumed their neighborhood.

Many neighbors also lost their homes, with some estimating up to 20 houses burned in the immediate community. While the immediate threat has decreased, 23,000 residents were still displaced and 40,000 advised to be ready to evacuate at a moment's notice. Over 900 firefighters, including personnel from 15 US states and international teams, continue to battle the Hawk Fire. Authorities are still investigating the cause of the human-caused wildfire.
