Kuku Kohli Dies At 77: Aruna Irani’s Husband & Filmmaker Who Gave Ajay Devgn His Bollywood Break Passes Away Of Heart Attack

Filmmaker Kuku Kohli, renowned for his 1991 directorial debut Phool Aur Kaante which propelled Ajay Devgn's career, passed away at the age of 77 after succumbing to a heart attack. His close friend and filmmaker Ashoke Pandit disclosed the sad news on SCREEN, expressing his disbelief and admiration for Kohli. Pandit emphasized Kohli's vibrant personality, noting that he was always fit, cheerful, and full of positive energy.

He described Kohli as a great technician, thinker, and human being, who had launched Devgn's career and had a deep connection with Raj Kapoor, serving as an assistant director for several decades. Pandit also highlighted Kohli's active involvement in the old age home in Lonavala and his commitment to social causes. Kohli began his Bollywood journey under the guidance of Raj Kapoor and assisted Rahul Rawail in two successful films starring Sunny Deol, Betaab and Arjun.

His directorial debut came in 1991 with Phool Aur Kaante, featuring Ajay Devgn, Madhoo, and Aruna Irani. He went on to helm films like Kohraam, Suhaag, Haqeeqat, Anari No. 1, and Zulmi, with Devgn in various roles. Kohli's last film was the romantic action thriller Yeh Dil Aashiqanaa in 2002 and Woh Tera Naam Tha in 2004. He was married twice, first to Rita Kohli, with whom he had two children, and later to Aruna Irani. His final rites are scheduled to take place at the Oshiwara Crematorium in Mumbai.
