Kano community rejects N10m bribe, alerts police over suspected drugs

The community of Bajallabe, situated near Kano's FCE Gate 1, has rejected a reported N10 million bribe offered to residents and local vigilantes. According to Lamara Garba, a spokesperson for Kano State's Multi-Agency Task Force on Drug Abuse and Illicit Substances, the incident unfolded early Tuesday morning after residents grew suspicious of a vehicle parked near a residential building.

Police sources indicate the vehicle was believed to be loaded with illicit substances. When community representatives and vigilantes inquired about the contents, the driver reportedly offered N10 million to the group to overlook the situation. However, the residents refused, insisting on alerting the appropriate authorities. The vigilante leader promptly informed the Multi-Agency Task Force and the Nigeria Police, leading to the seizure of the vehicle and the individuals involved, who are currently under police custody.

Garba emphasized that the substances in the vehicle are suspected, and their nature will be confirmed through investigation, potentially including laboratory analysis. Despite the alleged financial inducement, the community's decision to reject the bribe has been lauded as an act of courage and civic responsibility. The Multi-Agency Task Force chairman, Muhyi Magaji Rimin Gado, noted that the community plays a crucial role in combating drug trafficking and substance abuse.

As per a recent executive order by the Kano State governor, the location where the suspected substances were found will be secured, with additional measures to be implemented as per the executive order.
