Israel’s Netanyahu claims Iran tried to kill one of his sons

Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli Prime Minister, finally received his long-awaited war with Iran after urging the United States to launch a military strike. However, six months later, Israel may be in a worse situation than before the conflict. Iran, which Netanyahu had long viewed as an existential threat, has not only survived but seems to be growing more confident. Former Israeli intelligence analyst Danny Citrinowicz stated that while there were operational successes, strategically, Israel failed in its goals.

The Islamic republic’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was killed on Israel’s first day, and support was given to anti-Israeli groups. However, Khamenei had previously shown reluctance in pursuing nuclear weapons, which could change if Iran feels it has lost its conventional deterrents. Donald Trump, the US President, initially supported the war but later called for a ceasefire and a negotiated settlement due to public opposition and rising oil prices.

Under Netanyahu's leadership, Israel now faces a dilemma: accept a new nuclear deal with Iran, strengthening the regime, or try to weaken it further, risking a full-fledged pursuit of nuclear weapons. Despite inflicting significant damage, 92% of Israelis believe Iran gained more from the conflict, according to a June survey. This sentiment could have serious implications for Israel's future elections.

The war has also strained Israel's relationship with its closest ally, the United States. Public opinion in the US has turned against Israel, similar to the aftermath of its conflict with Hamas in Gaza. While Netanyahu and Trump have expressed support for the Iranian people, their aggressive rhetoric and strikes have damaged infrastructure and caused widespread harm to civilians.

If the conflict is remembered primarily for civilian casualties and damage rather than regime change, it could lead to lasting hostility between Israel and the US, even after the leaders change.
