Indiana Hoosiers 2026 Football Preview

Indiana football has had a chip on their shoulder in recent years, dating back to 2019 when then-athletic director Fred Glass accused Scott Frost of disrespecting the program. This prompted Indiana to target disrespect in their approach to games, most notably after being bypassed for a Big Ten championship game in favor of Ohio State.

After a poor stretch, including a loss to Ole Miss in the Outback Bowl, younger coach Curt Cignetti took over and quickly proved his worth with a 27-2 record over two seasons. Cignetti's returnees, including senior First Team All-Big Ten left tackle Carter Smith and two-year starter Bray Lynch at right guard, provide a strong foundation for the 2026 team.

Quarterback Josh Hoover from TCU is set to take over for Heisman winner Fernando Mendoza, and will be supported by senior Grant Wilson from Old Dominion. The running backs are also looking solid, with junior Lee Beebe, UAB transfer Lee Beebe, and returnee Boston College transfer Turbo Richard. The offense should be strong, with the addition of Michigan State transfer Nick Marsh, Michigan transfer Tyler Morris, and Tulane transfer Shazz Preston at wide receiver.

As for defense, the front seven is relatively strong with both interior tackles returning and new additions on the outside. The secondary is expected to be the strength of the defense, led by senior cornerback Jamari Sharpe and senior safety Amare Ferrell. While Indiana might not be a national championship contender, the depth and experience of the team should make for an exciting season.
