IERPP demands answers as GoldBod reports disappear from website

The Ghanaian opposition party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has rejected extortion allegations made by the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), Sammy Gyamfi, against its Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin. NPP Deputy General Secretary Haruna Mohammed stated that the party considers the allegation unsubstantiated and will not allow it to divert attention from its pursuit of accountability over the GoldBod controversy.

During an interview on JoyFM’s Top Story on August 25, Mr Mohammed was questioned about whether the NPP had conducted an internal investigation into the extortion accusation against Mr Afenyo-Markin. He stated that while the party did discuss the matter, they questioned the credibility of the individual making the allegation. The NPP's primary focus, according to Mr Mohammed, is to investigate the financial losses they allege within a state institution and ensure that those responsible are held accountable.

Gyamfi's past claims against individuals, which Mr Mohammed described as untrue, have diminished the credibility of his latest allegation. The NPP leader emphasized that Mr Afenyo-Markin, a respected lawyer and senior NPP member, would not be undermined by such unsubstantiated information. Despite rejecting the extortion allegation, the NPP remains committed to its broader efforts to investigate the GoldBod matter and demand accountability.

Mr Mohammed reiterated that the party will continue to pursue this investigation "to the end" and ensure that the correct actions are taken.
