Hong Kong jewellery shop slapped with 30-day tour group ban over coerced sales

Hong Kong's tourism authority has banned a jewelry shop from receiving tour groups for 30 days due to a guide's coercive sales tactics. Kaiser Jewellery International, which operates two locations in the city, will be barred from receiving inbound tour group visitors until September 24. The Travel Industry Authority (TIA) stated that it takes a strict stance against coerced shopping and any actions that tarnish the reputation of Hong Kong's tourism industry.

The suspension followed an investigation into a February incident where a mainland Chinese tour group was pressured by a guide to make purchases. In addition to the ban, the company's directors, managers, and all frontline staff were ordered to complete training courses within a month. This disciplinary action comes as concerns grow over low-cost Hong Kong tour packages that rely on shopping commissions and paid add-ons to generate revenue.

The TIA has been cracking down on coercive shopping and illegal tour guides since the beginning of the year, revoking a guide's license for inappropriate remarks and arresting two mainland women for working as unauthorized guides. The authority advises mainland visitors to ensure tour operators are legally qualified and that their itineraries are handled by licensed local travel agencies.
