Harry-Meghan UK return: Why Prince William, Kate could face a new Royal family test

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's anticipated extended stay in the UK has raised concerns within the royal family, potentially straining the relationship between Prince Harry and his elder brother, Prince William. The Sussexes, who ceased their royal duties in 2020, are expected to reside at a private residence outside London and will not resume their royal roles.

Their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, are set to begin their education in the UK in September. Royal commentator Kinsey Schofield revealed that Prince William was taken aback by the prospect of the Sussexes' prolonged return, as he had noticed Harry's public indications of wanting to spend more time in Britain but did not foresee such a significant reengagement.

British broadcaster Helena Chard expressed unease among Prince William and Catherine, Princess of Wales, regarding another round of intense scrutiny surrounding the Sussexes, describing it as part of the "endless Sussex soap opera." Royal expert Hilary Fordwich predicted that tensions could escalate, especially if the Sussexes interact with the wider royal family, with Catherine reportedly feeling particularly guarded due to the hurt she endured from Harry and Meghan.

Neil Sean noted that Harry and Meghan have not been invited to meet King Charles privately during their UK visit, as William has no desire to reconnect with his brother and minimal interest in Meghan. King Charles only learned about the Sussexes' UK return three days prior to its public announcement. The timing of the Sussexes' return is particularly sensitive for King Charles, who has been undergoing undisclosed cancer treatment since 2024.

Harry has expressed concerns over his father's health in the past, stating he was unsure "how much longer my father has." Royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams warned that Harry's return could create a particularly challenging situation for William and Catherine, as the brothers have not spoken in years, and their imminent arrival could intensify pressure on William and Catherine to reconcile, despite the deep-seated rift.

While the Sussexes' UK stay is not a return to royal duties, it could bring Harry closer to his father and brother, potentially drawing renewed attention to the family's unresolved divisions.
