GRA lists used fridges, air conditioners and underwear among prohibited imports

The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has been actively informing the public about goods that are prohibited from being imported into or exported from Ghana. This is part of their "GRA Connect" radio campaign aimed at educating taxpayers and the public about the Authority's responsibilities, taxpayers' rights and obligations, and the taxes and duties they manage.

Senior Revenue Officer Charles Okrah, speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show, explained that prohibited goods are items whose entry into or exit from the country is forbidden by law.

Okrah identified a range of items that are prohibited from being imported into Ghana. This includes animal carcasses and various used personal items such as underwear and sanitary products. Additionally, used household appliances like air conditioners and fridges are also banned. If these items are imported through Ghana's borders, they will be detained and seized by customs authorities.

When it comes to exports, Okrah emphasized that rosewood remains prohibited from being transported out of Ghana. The GRA advises importers and exporters to familiarize themselves with Customs requirements and obtain the necessary permits for restricted goods to avoid seizures, penalties, and potential prosecution.

For certain restricted items like firearms and other sensitive consignments, a permit or license is required for both import and export. Okrah explained that these regulations are in place to ensure public safety, public health, and environmental protection. These measures are carried out with the best interests of Ghanaians in mind, and they also help safeguard the country's revenue.
